Are you wondering when you should have your Childs heirloom portraits taken?
The tradition of photographing at a certain age
“What is the perfect age for heirloom portraits?” is a super common question among my mom friends and clients when it comes to Heirloom portraits! Most families would love someone to beautifully document their little one every step of the way. However, the reality is that most families have to be intentional about when they choose to enlist the services of a professional photographer.
Below are a few suggested ages for heirlooms to consider.
I personally recommend heirloom portraits within the ages of 9 months to 6 years.
9 MONTHS
9 months is a precious time to capture their gummy smiles, a few of their sparkly white teeth and their still very baby face. This is likely also the age where your baby is sitting up safely on their own. If baby is still a little wobbly, you can sit close by and support their hips. Safety is a big priority of mine!
1 YEAR
Turning one is SUCH a huge milestone, both for you and your not-so-little baby! What could be a more important milestone to celebrate with than an heirloom portrait?
Not only is this the perfect age for heirloom portraits, this is also the perfect time to add on a full body, natural light “lifestyle” portrait during your heirloom session. The Lifestyle Portrait add-on captures your child’s full heirloom outfit, as well as their precious personality.
2-3 YEARS
Maybe it’s my experience being a preschool photographer, but the toddler years are some of my all-time favorite ages to photograph.
Your baby has entered into toddlerhood, they’re starting to look like their own little person and curious about everything! This is the age where Im able to chat with them, be silly and truly capture glimpses of their personality.
The toddler years can also be a little unpredictable but don’t worry, I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve!
4-6 YEARS
At this age, children are a little more serious. The key is to captured them before they begin losing their baby teeth. Think of it as a portrait just before their child-like features look more gown up.
Below are some other things to consider when deciding the best age for heirloom portraits.
Heirloom portraits are rich in tradition, so some families have heirlooms of several generations. Do you, your mother and grandmother have a portrait at a certain age? If so, I’d absolutely try and have your children photographed around the same age.
do you want a portrait of each of your children?
Some families commission an heirloom portrait for their first child and choose to have each additional child photographed at the same age.
Other mamas have become increasingly aware of how fast their children are growing and changing. Maybe time has escaped them and they’d like to have portraits of all of their children taken right away, so they choose to have them photographed all at the same time.
The point here is that there is no perfect age for heirloom portraits! These are all merely suggestions. The real question is when is the perfect time for your family?
